Sandy Storyline self-producers and collaborates with partners to present workshops, events, site-specific installations, and exhibitions. The goal of these events is to share and collect stories while fostering public dialogue, debate and deeper understanding of shared experience.

In recognition of the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, The New York Public Library is partnering with Sandy Storyline to present an opportunity to hear and share first person stories of recovery and remembrance, beginning at Mid-Manhattan Library on Monday, October 27.
How are you doing two years after Sandy? What do you remember from the storm? What have you lost, and what have you gained? How are neighborhoods changing? What lessons do we need to learn for the future?
Sandy Storyline’s original, interactive display will provide a space for patrons to contribute cell phone images of the storm and ongoing recovery. They can also listen to a selection of firsthand accounts that have been submitted to Sandy Storyline over the last two years. Residents are also encouraged to share their own images, words and videos online at sandystoryline.com.
At Mid-Manhattan Library
Sandy Storyline’s interactive display will first be stationed from Monday, October 27 – Monday, November 11 at the entrance to Mid-Manhattan Library.
At New Dorp Library in Staten Island
After November 11, the display will travel to New Dorp Library where it will remain for a month, inviting participation from Staten Island residents in one of the hardest hit regions. A two-day writing workshop in collaboration with Sandy Storyline and NY Writers Coalition will also be hosted at New Dorp as an opportunity for patrons to craft stories in more depth. There are plans for the booth to continue to travel throughout the upcoming year to branches in areas most affected by the storm.
At City Island Library in the Bronx
After the New Dorp Libary, the display will travel to the City Island Library in the Bronx.

Writing Workshop & Party

We are looking forward to creating the space for folks to share how they have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy and what we want for the future of our communities. Let’s put pen to paper and see what comes out! The workshop is open to writers of all genres- poetry, fiction, memoir, spoken word and anything else- even those who think they’ve never written before! All levels of experience are also welcome.
The workshop will be led by Michael Premo of Sandy Storyline and Luke Nephew of the Peace Poets.
The workshop will be followed by a free party from 2pm–4pm with more food and music celebrating the work that LES groups have done in partnership with Rebuild by Design on future preparedness. So come for the workshop and stay for the party!

For this Stoop Series event, we’ll gather to share stories of how Hurricane Sandy has impacted our communities while exploring the ways that art and media offer a form of reflection and healing, and a powerful means of imagining a different future.
Join us at 6pm for a free community writing workshop with the NY Writers Coalition. A lot has happened this past year. Let’s put pen to paper and see what comes out. All levels of experience are welcome. Writing supplies and writing prompts will be provided, so just bring yourself. The event will feature Sandy Storyline, a participatory documentary project that is collecting and sharing stories of the impact of Sandy. Sandy Storyline features audio, video, photography, and text stories – contributed by residents and citizen journalists – all collected online and shared through web documentary and interactive exhibitions.
BRIC’s Stoop Series illuminates the arts and life around us in Brooklyn through artistic performances and presentations, framed by dynamic conversations with some of the city’s most innovative artists, thinkers, and tastemakers. Programs will explore the performing arts, film, media, visual arts, spoken word, and other creative fields. Engage with of the most innovative artistic voices in Brooklyn’s ever-expanding cultural scene on the monumental interior stoop of BRIC House, Brooklyn’s new home for the arts in downtown Brooklyn. Free, on most Tuesday nights.
Sandy, One Year Later: Sharing and Preserving Brooklyn’s Stories

It’s been one year, and though Super Storm Sandy has largely receded from the headlines, Brooklynites still grapple with its devastating impact. This program seeks to preserve and document the unique experiences of those whose daily lives continue to be impacted in the aftermath of Sandy. Our panel will include a homeowner (Andrea Hodge, Canarsie), NYCHA resident (Rasheed Johnson, a teen living in the Red Hook Houses), business owner (Michael “Buzzy” O’Keeffe from The River Cafe in DUMBO), and one of Coney Island’s first responders, all of whom continue to work to help their communities return to a “new normal” post Sandy. Also participating is Sandy Storyline, an organization that has gathered audio, video, photography, and text from residents and citizen journalists to document the storm and its aftermath, with the goal of advocating for a more just and sustainable future. Sady Sullivan, BHS Director of Oral History, will moderate.
This program is co-presented by the Brooklyn Community Foundation, whose Brooklyn Recovery Fund provided over $3 million in direct aid to individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in the borough’s waterfront communities.

Sandy Storyline is an official selection of The Tribeca Film Festival’s, inaugural Storyscapes program. Storyscapes celebrates new trends in digital media and recognizes artists who employ an interactive, web-based or cross-platform approach to story creation. The Storyscapes program presented five selections at a public, interactive installation, where storytelling and technology, authorship and openness intersect.
